Mela mania

Glasgow Mela is one of the most colourful, eye-catching events in the city’s West End Festival, pulling in thousands of spectators each year.

In fact, this year the multicultural extravaganza is expected to draw in 50,000 people to its base in Kelvingrove Park.

And looking at the line-up, it’s really no surprise.

Full of varied events - such as the Hong Lok Lion Dance Team, who will perform a traditional Chinese dance, Punjabi No1, a 17-strong group of Bhangra dancers, and Eyes of Youth, the Princes Trust drama group, who will be performing a play written and directed by themselves - it’s easy to see why those of all ages love the Glasgow Mela.

Aside from actual performances, there’s also a great range of arts and crafts to get stuck into at the annual event.

Check out the workshops, which offer activities such as mask making, or find out more about the Onsite Theatre – an impressive walkabout theatre company established in 1992, which never rehearses, never auditions or interviews new members, yet has managed to grow completely organically over the past 15 years.

The kids wont’ be left out either – the Children's Tent will be perfect for them, where there will be a magician and puppet shows to entertain.

Glasgow Mela is being held at Kelvingrove Park on June 22.
