Kilmartin

by Graeme Smith

Ancient history, Celtic romance and picturesque countryside – the village of Kilmartin in Argyll is a wonderful place to discover Scotland’s prehistoric past.

If standing stones, stone circles and chambered cairns are your thing, then you’ll be spoiled for choice – there are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village, and 150 of them are prehistoric.

Kilmartin House Museum of Ancient Culture provides an overview of the history of the area, and Kilmartin Church has a fine collection of 13th to 17th century gravestones. Nearby are the restored Kilmartin Castle, and the ruined Carnasserie Castle.

There is also a terrific tearoom which lets you enjoy a snack while gazing over the historic countryside.
