Discovery Point

by Graeme Smith

There’s a shipload of historical fun to be had at Dundee’s Discovery Point Antarctic Museum.

The highpoint is the RSS Discovery, the research ship used in Captain Scott’s heroic but ill-fated attempt to conquer the South Pole.

Visitors can tour the ship and get an idea of the conditions Scott’s team would have faced. In the centre itself there are state-of-the-art multimedia exhibitions with loads of buttons to press and fascinating facts to find out.

Discovery Point is run by Dundee Heritage Trust, a small charity which also runs Verdant Works – a former jute factory which is now an industrial museum.

Both exhibitions have been given five stars by VisitScotland, and combined tickets are available so that visitors can see both at a discount.

Discovery Point is open from 10am-6pm on Mondays to Saturdays and 11am-6pm on Sundays from April to October, and 10am-5pm on Mondays to Saturdays and 11am-5pm on Sundays from November to March. Verdant Works has the same summer opening hours, but in the winter is open 10.30am-4.30pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 11am-4.30pm on Sundays.
