Highland Museum of Childhood

by Graeme Smith

Take a trip back in time and find out just what a Highland childhood used to be like in this small independently-run museum.

Set in a restored Victorian station built in 1885 in the beautiful spa village of Strathpeffer, the museum includes the Angela Kellie Doll Collection - 272 dolls from as far back as the early 1880s.

Other attractions include four dolls’ houses with hundreds of tiny items of furniture, a history of Highland childhood, and a collection of photographs, story books, school books and other printed material.

The collection is so large that it can’t all be displayed at once, so the museum rotates it regularly, meaning that there’s always something different to see.

The old station is set in a garden and picnic area with easy free parking.

The Highland Museum of Childhood is open from 10am-5pm on Mondays to Fridays and 2pm-5pm on Sundays from April to June and in September and October, and from 10am-7pm Mondays to Fridays, 10am-5pm on Saturdays and 2pm-5pm on Sundays in July and August. It is closed from November to March but can be viewed by appointment. Entry is free to local residents, otherwise it's £2 (£1.50) and family tickets are available.
