Eurydice – that’s the one about the nymph who marries Orpheus, but dies and gets carted off to the Underworld, where her lute-strumming hubby uses his musical skills to win her back, but loses her forever when he turns around to look at her.

As you can tell from the photo here, however, the original Greek myth has undergone a bit of a modern makeover for the version coming to Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre this week.

American playwright Sarah Ruhl won plaudits when her Eurydice first played on the New York stage, and this new touring show (directed by ATC’s Bijan Sheibani as a co-production with Drum Theatre Plymouth and The Young Vic) marks the European premiere of her reinterpretation.

We’re betting that its story of a young woman cast down a hole into a strange realm is a bit more satisfying than Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.
