The choreographer behind Nutcracker! and 1995’s sensational all-male Swan Lake has adapted Oscar Wilde’s famous novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, about a vain young man who makes a pact with the devil in order to retain his youthful good looks.
Described as a ‘black fairy tale’, the New Adventures production is set in present-day London, and explores our obsession with image in relation to art and politics.
Bourne is renowned for his storytelling skills. As well as lavish and hugely popular new interpretations of classic ballets he has created two ‘dansicals’ – Edward Scissorhands, based on the Tim Burton film, and The Car Man, based on Bizet’s Carmen.
Expect a dazzlingly inventive treatment of the seductive gothic tale.
Matthew Bourne’s Dorian Gray opens at the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh on August 22 and runs until August 30.
