Love and hate
by Michael PringleThe new production from Scottish Ballet is arguably Shakespeares most famous story of all Romeo and Juliet.
The tragedy, re-enacted countless times since it was written over four hundred years ago, tells the story of two young lovers from opposing sides of two feuding families.
This version has a modern slant and is set in Italy in the not too distant past. Choreography by Krzysztof Pastor, resident choreographer of Dutch National Ballet, will be combined with music by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
Scottish Ballet has recently produced new modern versions of classic tales including The Nutcracker and Cinderella. The company, which has been in Glasgow since 1969 and was relaunched in 2003 with increased funding from the Scottish Executive, is renowned for the strong classical technique of its dancers.
Scottish Ballets Romeo and Juliet tours to Edinburgh Festival Theatre, His Majestys Theatre in Aberdeen, Eden Courty in Inverness and the Theatre Royal, Glasgow.
