Trivial pursuits

Oscar Wilde’s ‘trivial comedy for serious people’, The Importance of Being Earnest, has been gracing stages all over the world for over a century since it first opened on Valentine’s Day 1895 at St James’ Theatre in London.

Michael Lunney directs this touring production by Middle Ground Theatre Company, which comes to Kirkcaldy and Dundee at the end of the month.

The story is of gentlemen friends Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, a pair of eligible young ladies, plus Algernon’s imaginary friend and Jack’s alter-ego, Earnest. Confused? You won’t be, as Wilde’s classic script is easy to follow and timelessly funny.

There is a wealth of television and stage talent in the cast: viewers of The Bill will recognise Tom Butcher and Jim Alexander; and fans of hospital dramas might know Tony Britton, Corrinne Wicks (Doctors) and Zoie Kennedy (The Royal).

The Importance of Being Earnest is at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy on 24 April and Dundee Rep Theatre from 29 April to 3 May.
