The latest play by renowned Scottish writer Douglas Maxwell comes to Edinburgh this month, courtesy of Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company.

Blending the world of sci-fi with the ‘real’ world, The Mother Ship tells of a stress-out 18-year-old who gets a homecoming call from outer space.

Taking the concept of teen alienation to a whole new level, this comic chase drama explores what it means to be young and different. Life isn’t easy for our hero Eliot – with his step-mum pregnant and his disabled brother missing he’s got a lot on his plate even before he encounters a policeman who believes in Klingons.

Maxwell’s previous plays include the playground-set Decky Does a Bronco and the computer games-inspired Helmet. A six-strong cast will bring his latest vivid tale to life, against a bold, space-themed set that features such unexplained phenomena as a car that turns into a boat.

The Mother Ship is at the Traverse Theatre from March 25 to 29.
