The Princes Street Passion

by Fergus Grierson

More than 4,000 spectators are expected in Edinburgh’s West Princes Street Gardens this Saturday as the capital’s popular outdoor Easter play returns for a fourth year.

Open to people of all ages and beliefs, the play is billed as an easily accessible, free community event designed to commemorate Easter from a Christian perspective.

Very much in the tradition of the Mystery Plays – versions of Bible stories performed outdoors popular since the Middle Ages – the action takes place in several different locations around the Gardens, taking up the story of Jesus in the final year of his life, and following events leading up to the crucifixion.

The performance starts to the west of the Ross Bandstand at 2.30pm, and finishes at around 5pm. There is enough built in for the crowd to get between the different scenes, with seating for provided for elderly and disabled audience members.

As well as enjoying the backing of the backing of major church organisations, and boasting the input of a host of volunteers from across Edinburgh, the play also showcases the talents of theatre professionals like Artistic Director Suzanne Lofthus, Stage Manager Kelly Butterfield and actor Duncan Rennie, who plays the part of Jesus.

As the play takes place entirely outdoors, organisers recommend audience members wrap up warm and bring waterproofs in case it rains. And, since it takes place right in the heart of the city, public transport is probably advised. If you do have to take the car, though, there are plenty of spaces available in big city centre car parks at Castle Terrace, St James Centre, and Greenside.

Princes Street Easter Play is on in West Princes Street Gardens on Saturday March 22 from 2.30pm.
