Pulling a few strings

by Shona Craven

Reaching the parts of Scotland other festivals can't reach, the Puppet Animation Festival is now in its 24th year and bigger than ever.

From humble origins at the Netherbow in Edinburgh, the event has grown into a six-week extravaganza taking in the entire country.

Glove puppets, shadow puppets, rod puppets and marionettes all feature in this year's programme, which has a special emphasis on work created in Scotland.

Companies including Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre, Kidgloves, Shona Reppe Puppets and Catherine Wheels will be presenting their latest shows, ranging from fresh takes on fairy tales to brand new stories.

Performances with an international flavour include Iqbal the Childweaver by Sokobauno Puppet Theatre Company and The Black Bull of Norroway by Yugen Puppet Company.

The 2008 Puppet Animation Festival runs until April 26 at venues across Scotland.
