Stephen King has not generally been well-served by his film adaptations but this is a decent effort, possibly because it is so much like The Shining.

Based on a King short story, it has all the trademarks; a tortured writer, a creepy hotel room, and a whole bunch of inner demons.

John Cusack is the writer who makes his living debunking the paranormal. His work takes him to the swanky Dolphin Hotel in New York and the notorious room 1408. Four people have died there. The manager, Samuel L. Jackson, warns him that the room is evil but Cusack won1t be told and successfully gets a court order to get into the room.

What’s inside? That would be telling but this is a very effective, low key, psychological horror movie in which John Cusack does a fine job of chewing the scenery.
