Alison Rowat's Review

Red alert – all clean freaks and hypochondriacs enter a screening of this virus thriller at your peril. Steven Soderbergh’s all-star ensemble starts with Gwyneth Paltrow looking hot and sweaty in an airport after a trip to the Far East.

One person’s coughing leads to another, and before you know it things are so bad Kate Winslet has donned a surgical mask and is out in the field tackling the mysterious new disease.

Soderbergh gleefully dispatches victims as Scott Burns’s whipsmart script makes political points and supplies some bleakly comic moments besides.

Contagion is about as far from Soderbergh’s last major feature, the two-part Che, as Helensburgh is from Havana, but as a piece of grisly entertainment it works.

Now wash your hands, please.
